101 & One

U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 run along the West Coast, from the rain forests of northern Washington State to the heat of Los Angeles. This 2500 km stretch offers some of the most beautiful and rugged shoreline in America and it has captured the imagination and left an impression on the soul of nearly everyone who has traveled it.

U.S. Route 101 is known throughout the world as a symbol of American culture and lifestyle. It has been used in movies, video games, many songs and is one of the legendary “road trip” routes. The less traveled, but arguably more beautiful California State Route 1, Pacific Coast Highway, which hugs the California coast when the 101 heads inland, is truly one of the most breathtaking roads in the world. Spanning the rugged West Coast, these roads lay out some of the most beautiful and powerful landscape there is.

I often use long exposure in my photography, creating a surreal dreamlike effect and immersed sense of the spirit of a place and its timeless qualities. This gives a deeper feeling to my work, showing the passage of time on the landscape, the clouds streaking through the sky or the waves becoming a mist on the shore. I am able to see it all a different way, knowing what it will look like over a period of time.

The sky and ocean are such an important part of my work. I am always looking for interesting clouds and big powerful waves, trying to capture what you can feel standing there looking out at the beauty and anger of nature.
